Background — Early Life & Spark of Change


Daniel Spencer was born around 1990 in Renmark, in South Australia’s Riverland region, and grew up in Craigburn Farm, Adelaide. Even in high school, he showed early leadership—organizing a school environmental group for awareness about climate change, complete with events and a “climate change awareness week.” 


Activism & Global Engagement — Leading with Purpose

Daniel left his university music studies in 2010 to devote himself full-time to the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) . He served as a youth delegate at the UN climate talks in Mexico, orchestrating actions to spotlight the thousands of yearly deaths attributed to climate change .


Campaigns & Collective Power — Walk for Solar & Beyond

In 2011, Daniel became the SA state coordinator for AYCC, where he spearheaded the “Re-power Port Augusta” campaign. This included the impactful “Walk for Solar”, where 100 activists walked ~330 km from Port Augusta to Adelaide to demand a shift from coal to solar power . He’s worked with youth across Australia to protect the Great Barrier Reef, advocate for renewable energy, and rally for stronger climate policies .

Alongside his activism, Spencer is also a musician—he was the songwriter and lead singer for the roots-reggae band Babylon Burning as of 2014 .


Institutional Leadership — From Campaigns to Councils

In 2018, Spencer took on a leadership role in the Australian Services Union (ASU), serving as Organising Lead for the SA & NT Branch, championing both workers’ rights and climate issues . He continues to advise on governmental climate policy as part of the Premier’s Climate Change Council .
